There are some instances where a SharePoint page does display the ribbon so you are not able to Edit the page, this normally happens if the page is a web part page and not a standard wiki page. There are two ways to Edit this page, use SharePoint Designer or just add the following [?] switch at the end of the URL as demonstrated below.
http://www.site.com/pages/PageWithNoEdit.aspx ?Mode=Edit&DisplayMode=Design
This should place the page in a design mode with Edit functionality

So if you need to edit the Shared view of the default page, add the following parameters after the page extension.
default.aspx?mode=edit&PageView=Shared
or if you wanted to Browse web parts and add them to your Personal view:
newForm.aspx?ToolPaneView=2&PageView=Personal
and if you use the following ?contents=1 in query string(URL) it will put the page into webpart maintenance mode, where you will be able to update or change a view of a webpart or even delete the webpart from the page.
This could help resolving issues if a page throws an error with regards to a webpart and does not load.

sorry about the delay in getting back to you, so by now you must have the answer you are looking for, if not here is a start.
There are a few ways to setting up your own blog and not all cost money, the quickest way would be to sign up at wordpress dot com. from there you can create a free wordpress blog and the quickest way to start. if you have or are intending to setup your own site, then you should register for an account with one of the hosting companies, I use iPage (link to signup on my home page), you can see their link on my home page, they only charge around $4 per month based on an anual purchase and renewal so the total for year one is around $48, then year 2 will go up to $6 per month so around $72 each year from then on. With unlimited storage and bandwidth i feel it is quite reasonable.
Once registered they have web registrar services to register the domain of your choice, and a wizard to install your wordpress site, they also allow multiple sites at the same time.
